When you consider that consumption here is reckoned to be among the highest per capita around the world, it's true to say that water conservation should be top of the list for a typical household. If you're considering the introduction of a water tank so that you can harvest some of this precious commodity "at source," how can you make sure that you look after the tank carefully so that it provides you with everything that you need going forward?
Why Maintenance Is Important
Many people choose to install water tanks because doing so will save them money on their annual water bill. Others may calculate their carbon footprint and believe that such a tank would help them be more friendly to the environment. Whatever your motivation, you have to ensure that you maintain the tank carefully on a regular basis.
Clear Passageway
Firstly, it is likely that you will be gathering the water that falls on the roof of your property, and this water has to go through your guttering system before it arrives in the tank. Consequently, make sure that these gutters are kept clean, especially during the autumn season. You have to clean away any debris caused by birds or other tiny animals so the water can flow unimpeded.
Critters Out
Next, make sure that the tank is properly sealed and has appropriately placed mosquito meshing. If not, you may encounter a big problem with mosquitoes, and other pests may get in and make their home, as well.
System Check
A water tank system contains many different parts, and each of these has to be adequately maintained throughout the year; if not, the quality of the water will be affected. Always make sure that the pump is operating correctly and that none of the pipes have been compromised.
Checking the Content
You may decide that you will only use rainwater for sprinkling the garden, washing clothes or toilet use. In these cases, you don't have to be concerned about the water quality as much, but if you are using it for cooking, showering or even drinking, then you have to check its overall quality at least twice per year.
Sediment Removal
Finally, bring in an outside contractor every couple of years to remove all the sediment that will build up within the tank through natural use. This is quite a messy job, so you will need to leave it to the experts.
